PERFECT SHOES FOR ME!

I live in Florida and prefer to wear shoes that don't require socks. I prefer this for the sake of comfort, coolness, and convenience: we are an easy-going lot and my employer let's me dress how I like.

My ideal would be boat shoes: sharper, more stylish, etc. However - and this is the primary reason I switched to Crocs - if you wear those with no socks like many do, before long you have no friends (you guessed it, the smell).

Well, naturally, selling point #1 for me (and the only reason I tolerate the family look, other than the supreme, wide-feet comfort) is that Crocs will NEVER stink...wipe them out, all of that bacteria-laden, smell-creating dead skin comes right out...unlike, say, a Birkenstock, where it largely stays embedded in the suede footbed and reeks or boat shoes, which can become truly atrocious.

Enter these shoes...

I would never wear the full plastic Crocs, they are ridiculous looking. So I switched to the Crocs family about a year and a half (?) ago with a pair of their leather topped clogs. Leather = a shred of dignity. They looked (somewhat) less goofily shaped than regular crocs and they had the respectability and "stealth" look of the leather top. The only tell-tale signs came if I lifted my foot to show the side profile of the shoe (with the squarish vent holes and thick bouncy-looking sole).

That said, while those shoes were supremely comfortable and served me well, they had some serious flaws:

1.) The holes in the sides, while providing ventilation, would let dirty puddle water in just about any time you walked in the rain and

2.) The WHOLE "outsole" or sole (the very bottom part) was Croslite material through and through, all the way to the footbed...one continous piece of molded Croslite material...and that stuff is just not durable when put to the "grindstone" of pavement walking! Within two weeks the mini-tread markings had been worn out and within six months they had started to lose their "major" gripping treads and smooth and flatted on the bottom. With that in mind, you certainly wouldn't want to run in them, they'd have a hole in them after a few weeks!

It took mine over a year of light use to wear a hole in them, but it was still disappointing that such a comfortable, gratifying shoe would be rendered useless. I am sure Crocs didn't mind a quicker repurchase, but I must say they REALLY did good by me with this Mesa model:

First, no side holes. Just a leather upper that "breathes." Maybe not the cool blasts I would get with the vent holes, but very tolerable. BUT - I can walk through wet grass and puddles (a strong benefit of these shoes over regular shoes, by the way) with confidence, knowing my feet won't be touched by nasty water anymore.

Second, and the ONLY reason I repurchased (I would not have if it were not for this, as I was displeased with the durability of my first pair), was the nicely gripping, more durable, ADDITIONAL rubber outsole. This, I can tell, will make these shoes last far longer...as well as be safer (I had slipped a few times on wet, painted concrete in my flattened/worn previous pair).

I have the chocolate/mushroom (doesn't that sound disgusting?) color (which is beautiful by the way), and the outsole portion is a lighter tan color. In any event, I would never buy Crocs again without the harder rubber outsole.

That said, with this more "rugged" outsole, these shoes are in no way stiffer - to me they feel exactly the same as when my previous pair were new. 100% as comfy, 100% as supportive, 100% as gratifying. No appreciable difference.

Lastly, on style: yes, these were birthed from a very goofy line of very goofy shoes. And you still see clues of that lineage, when viewing it from the side in detail, etc. But that said, in everyday use and to the naked eye, they are FINE. They have really made strides to streamline some of the excesses of the past, and have produced in this model, to my eye, a very passable shoe that won't get you laughed at.

They are beautifully wide for someone with wide feet like myself, they look (I will be honest, if you are used to "nicer" shoes) at least PASSABLE with pants or what have you...they do not have sleek, Italian style, they are a touch wide looking, but really the makers have made great strides and have produced a fine and very acceptable looking shoe in terms of the dignity desired by most...and I would give a cautious recommendation to pretty much anyone. They are slightly more on the "comfort" side of the "comfort vs. style" fence...but that said, I give my cautions recommendation on these to a broad audience. That said, if you are on the other hand purely a comfort junkie like me, go get them now!

In terms of style, these improve upon the previous model I had by a factor of maybe 40%...which was already 60% more dignified than regular Crocs...not perfect or 100% stealth, but ever farther away from the goofy plastic gardening clog look that everyone hates about the original shoe.

Oh - forgot to say: these have a nice elastic lip thing going on in the leather upper that allows them to stay on your foot but also flex more as you are walking...and it's noticeable: comfort increases that much more. Yet another improvement and benefit.

I wear mine with the strap shoved down in the back (over the back of the shoe's "heel" - makes it look more like a shoe that way, plus I hate using the strap. Either that or I put it over the top in front. Out of the way.

Finally, faulty as some may be (not mine!), the aged-look brass rivet is beautiful and matches well with the mushroom colored shoe.

Crocs took a great idea (less goofy, more normal looking shoe styling) and FIXED the major flaws of previous iterations by making them more durable, more practical, more comfortable and better-styled than even their previous attempts at going for a more dignified look.
